How We Rated Companies for Our Reviews

Our Policygenius expert reviews give each insurance company a rating between 1 and 5 stars. Here’s how we calculated these ratings:

Price (35%): We evaluated each company’s average rate and discounts.

Financial Strength (25%): We considered A.M. Best Financial Strength Ratings, S&P credit ratings, and Moody’s credit ratings.

Customer Experience (20%): Companies were rated based on J.D. Power Auto Claims Satisfaction and Digital Experience surveys, as well as the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ complaint index.

Coverage Options (20%): We rated companies based on the number and quality of coverage options, with more points given for less common endorsements.

After calculating raw values for each company, we converted them to z-scores and t-scores, standardizing them to a 5-point scale for each company’s overall rating.

How We Calculated Coverage Costs

We use rate data provided by Quadrant Information Services to calculate the average cost of a full-coverage policy from each insurer. This data includes every ZIP code across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., for a 30-year-old male driver with a 2017 Toyota Camry and the following coverage limits:

  • Bodily injury liability: $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident

  • Property damage liability: $50,000 per accident

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist: $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident

  • Comprehensive: $500 deductible

  • Collision: $500 deductible
